Chandra Observations of Gas Stripping in the Elliptical Galaxy Ngc 4552 in the Virgo Cluster
We use a 54.4 ks Chandra observation to study ram-pressure stripping in NGC 4552 (M89), an elliptical galaxy in the Virgo Cluster. Chandra images in the 0.5−2 keV band show a sharp leading edge in the surface brightness 3.1 kpc north of the galaxy center, a cool (kT = 0.51 −0.06 keV) tail with mean density ne ∼ 5.4± 1.7× 10 −3 cm extending ∼ 10 kpc to the south of the galaxy, and two 3 − 4 kpc ...
متن کاملNGC 4254 : a spiral galaxy entering the Virgo cluster
Deep Effelsberg Hi spectra of the one-armed, bright Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC 4254 are presented. Five different positions were observed in the 21 cm Hi line with the Effelsberg 100-m telescope: one in the center and 4 located one HPBW to the NE, NW, SW, and SE, respectively, from the galaxy center. The spectra are compared to existing deep VLA observations, and the single dish and interf...
متن کاملTelescope Imaging of Bipolar Nuclear Shells in the Disturbed Virgo Cluster Galaxy NGC 4438
We present broadband and narrowband Hubble Space Telescope images of the central region of the heavily disturbed Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4438 (Arp120), whose nucleus has been described as a type 1 LINER or dwarf Seyfert. Narrowband Hα and [NII] HST images reveal striking bipolar shell features, 1 kpc in projected length from end-to-end, which are likely the result of an outflow from the nuclea...
متن کاملAtomic gas far away from the Virgo cluster core galaxy NGC 4388 A possible link to isolated star formation in the Virgo cluster ?
We have discovered 6 10 7 M⊙ of atomic gas at a projected distance greater than 4 ′ (20 kpc) from the highly inclined Virgo spiral galaxy NGC 4388. This gas is most probably connected to the very extended Hα plume detected by Yoshida et al. (2002). Its mass makes a nuclear outflow and its radial velocity a minor merger as the origin of the atomic and ionized gas very unlikely. A numerical ram p...
متن کاملA Supermassive Black Hole in the S0 Galaxy Ngc 3245
The S0 galaxy NGC 3245 contains a circumnuclear disk of ionized gas and dust with a radius of 1. 1 (or 110 pc), making it an ideal target for dynamical studies with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST ). We have obtained spectra of the nuclear disk with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, using an 0. 2-wide slit at five parallel positions. Measurements of the Hα and [N II] emission lines are ...
